At CreuTech we were delighted to collaborate with National Youth Theatre of Wales on an R&D residency at the Wales Millennium Centre, exploring how XR (extended reality) can enhance performance, storytelling and movement.
This two-day residency brought together a vibrant mix of disciplines, theatre, writing, movement and immersive technology, to give young performers an insight into how creative technology can shape the theatre of tomorrow.
The Creative Team
Matthew Bulgo – Playwright, Dramaturg & Director
Laura Meaton – Movement Director
Megan Childs – Producer (National Youth Theatre of Wales)
CreuTech – XR / Creative Technology (Klaire Tanner & Sean Rodrigo)
The Process
Working with the fantastic young ensemble of NYTW, the residency explored:
Introducing XR tools in a rehearsal room context
Playful experiments with immersive storytelling
Layering movement, writing and interactive technology
Co-creating short pieces that tested how XR might shift perspective and unlock imagination
For CreuTech, it was a chance to prototype approaches to blending performance and immersive media in a live training environment. The emphasis was on exploration rather than finished product — creating a safe space for experimentation and discovery.
Outcomes
Young performers gained hands-on experience with XR and creative tech tools.
Writers and movement directors saw new ways to integrate technology into their practice.
CreuTech developed workflows for live XR prototyping in theatre settings.
Support
This project was supported by Creative Wales, whose backing made the residency possible.
