Unity for Artists: The Big Thing 2026
CreuTech delivered a bilingual (Welsh & English) hands-on Unity for Artists workshop as part of Crossover Labs and Immersive Arts UK’s The Big Thing, designed to introduce artists and creative practitioners to Unity without assuming a background in games development or coding.
The aim was to make a real-time games engine feel less intimidating and show how Unity can be used as a creative tool for building interactive, immersive and experimental work.
Getting hands-on with Unity
Rather than spending the session talking about what Unity can do, participants jumped straight into the software.
We explored the Unity interface before creating and manipulating objects and getting comfortable navigating a 3D scene.
From there, participants began bringing in 3D models and assets, exploring textures and materials, and learning how existing assets can be used to quickly start building their own digital environments.

The workshop also introduced different types of assets, from environments and props to characters and interactable objects.

Bringing things to life
We then moved into animation, introducing some of Unity’s animation tools.
Participants explored the basics of keyframing and creating animation inside Unity, alongside examples of character animation and other ways movement can be added to a real-time experience.

From Unity to VR
Although there wasn’t time for everyone to create their own VR build during the session, we walked through the process of preparing and building a Unity project for a VR headset, giving participants an understanding of how the work they had been creating could move from the editor into VR.
The outcome
By the end of the workshop, participants had gone from opening Unity to navigating a 3D scene, working with objects, assets, textures and materials, and beginning to explore animation.
The aim was to demystify Unity and give artists enough practical experience to start experimenting with real-time 3D themselves.
